Hollywood is turning to YouTube creators for its next generation of filmmakers.

Recent box office successes suggest the strategy may be paying off. "Backrooms," directed by 20-year-old YouTube creator Kane Parsons, is projected to earn around $60 million on its opening weekend, potentially outperforming Disney's latest Star Wars release. Meanwhile, "Obsession," directed by 26-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker, has already generated $74 million in ticket sales.

Another standout example is Mark Fischbach, better known as Markiplier, whose independently produced film "Iron Lung" reportedly cost $3 million to make and has earned roughly $50 million at the box office.

While internet creators have transitioned into mainstream entertainment before, these films highlight a growing trend: Hollywood studios are increasingly scouting talent from YouTube. Studios such as A24 and Blumhouse are backing creators who first built audiences online, treating YouTube as a pipeline for emerging filmmakers.

The approach reflects a broader shift in the entertainment industry. As younger audiences spend more time on digital platforms, Hollywood is looking to creators who already understand how to capture attention and build loyal communities.

The bigger question is whether more creators can replicate Markiplier's success by converting online followers into paying moviegoers. If they can, YouTube may become one of Hollywood's most important talent pools.
