YouTube is urging creators to respond to proposed UK rules that could change how videos are recommended, warning the changes may give greater visibility to traditional broadcasters over independent creators.
The UK government has launched a public consultation on proposals that would make public service broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 more prominent on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, particularly during major news events. The consultation also covers misinformation and changing viewing habits.
In response, YouTube sent messages to some creators titled, "Proposed UK rules could control your feed. Keep YouTube Yours," encouraging them to review the proposals and submit feedback before the consultation closes.
The platform argues the proposed "prominence regime" would require it to prioritize certain broadcasters, reducing the visibility of creator content regardless of what viewers choose to watch.
YouTube says the changes could limit channel growth and weaken the relationship between creators and their audiences.
Creators have until August 31 to submit their responses through the UK government's consultation process.
