A YouTuber dropped a night-vision camera 700 feet into the Indian Ocean near Bali and captured footage of a rare shark species never before filmed alive in the wild.
Barny Dillarstone, known for filming marine life deep underwater, says he may be the first person to place a night-vision camera at that depth in the area around Bali’s “Black Magic Island.”
The footage first showed common deep-sea species, including a Western Spotted Gummy Shark and a Bluntnose Sixgill Shark — a species often described as ancient due to its prehistoric lineage.
But the biggest surprise came when Dillarstone spotted a shark he couldn’t identify himself. After consulting shark experts, he says the animal was confirmed to be an Indonesian Houndshark, marking what could be the first-ever live recording of the species on camera.
The expedition also captured footage of a giant stingaree, a large ray species that Dillarstone said was roughly the same length as his body.
