A Moroccan YouTuber has been sentenced to eight months in prison after posting a viral video in which he skinned, cooked, and ate a dead stray dog.

Ayoub Ben Nesnes, 26, who is known online as Bn Nsns, was sentenced by the Temara Court of First Instance on July 6 and fined 20,000 Moroccan dirhams (around $2,000).

The 41-minute video, uploaded during Eid al-Adha, showed him collecting a dog that had reportedly been killed in a road accident before skinning, roasting, and eating it, triggering widespread outrage across Morocco.

Ben Nesnes described the act as an alternative Eid sacrifice and said it was intended as a protest against rising livestock prices, claiming he could not afford to buy a sheep.

Following the backlash, he denied killing the dog himself, insisting he had found it dead by the roadside after a traffic accident.

Authorities later arrested him in the northern city of Martil and transferred him to Arjat 1 prison.

Prosecutors charged him with insulting Islam, killing and mutilating an animal without justification, making criminal threats, inciting violence, and publishing online content considered harmful to public order and morals.

Several animal welfare and civil society organizations joined the case, with one group reportedly seeking a five-year prison sentence and a 500,000-dirham (about $50,000) fine.

The court dismissed the civil claims but upheld the criminal ruling, sentencing Ben Nesnes to eight months in prison and imposing the 20,000-dirham fine.
