YouTube is facing backlash after launching new AI features that let creators “remix” other people’s Shorts using Google Omni AI.
The tool allows users to change themes, edit backgrounds, and modify uploaded Shorts with AI-generated elements. YouTube says remixed videos will include digital watermarks, metadata, and links to the original creator, while users can also choose to opt out.
The update quickly sparked criticism from major creators. Jacksfilms replied: “No thank you.”
“Excuse me, but what the actual f*ck, YouTube,” creator The Spiffing Brit wrote, while others called the feature “soulless slop” and accused the platform of pushing AI too aggressively into content creation.
Some users were also frustrated that creators appear to be automatically opted into the remix system unless they manually disable it.
The rollout comes as YouTube continues expanding AI tools across the platform, including a new “Ask YouTube” search assistant for Premium users in the United States.
At the same time, YouTube says it is adding more protections against AI abuse, including easier deepfake takedowns and improved likeness detection tools through Content ID.
