YouTube is testing a new feature that allows videos to be viewed only by a channel’s most dedicated followers.
The option, called “Top Fans,” appeared for some creators during the upload process in late May. Unlike “Unlisted” videos, which anyone with a link can watch, or “Members Only” content reserved for paying subscribers, Top Fans videos are limited to a channel’s most engaged viewers.
According to the feature description, only the top 1% of viewers who regularly watch and interact with a creator’s content can view and comment on these videos.
The feature quickly sparked confusion among creators, many questioning why they would intentionally restrict a video to such a small audience. Some joked that it seemed designed for people who wanted to upload videos without anyone watching them.
As debate grew online, YouTube clarified that the feature is currently being tested primarily for music artists rather than general creator channels. The company says the goal is to give artists a way to reward their most loyal fans with exclusive content and deeper engagement opportunities.
The feature was first announced in 2025 as part of a pilot program, but it has only recently started appearing in the upload settings for some users. While YouTube has not confirmed whether it plans a broader rollout, the tool appears intended for special bonus content rather than major public releases.
