Mark Zuckerberg believes that within the next five years, billions of people will have their own personal AI agents that understand their goals and work on their behalf around the clock.
Speaking during Meta's latest earnings call, Zuckerberg said these AI assistants could help users manage everything from finances and health to relationships and everyday household tasks. He also predicted that messaging apps like WhatsApp will become central to this future, noting that WhatsApp is already Meta's biggest platform for interacting with its AI.
Meta is far from alone in chasing AI agents. Companies like Google and Anthropic are also investing heavily in AI systems that can perform tasks for users instead of simply answering questions.
To support this vision, Meta is pouring billions into AI infrastructure. The company recently partnered with BlackRock on a $14 billion data center in Texas, but those investments are weighing on its finances.
Free cash flow fell 91% year over year to $784 million, while Reality Labs, the division behind Meta's AR and VR products, posted another quarterly loss of roughly $4.6 billion, bringing its cumulative losses to around $88 billion since 2021.
Despite the costs, Zuckerberg remains confident that personal AI agents will become Meta's next major business. The company has already rolled out AI-powered business agents on WhatsApp and Messenger, with more than one million businesses adopting them.
Zuckerberg believes consumer AI agents will eventually reach billions of users and form the foundation of Meta's future products and revenue.
